My mother, Joan (aka Joey), always loved a sale and was an inveterate shopper with a finely tuned eye. She loved estate and garage sales and could go into the dingiest basement and emerge with a treasure. While she did not sew clothes, she picked up textiles, fabric, and buttons and found antique sewing supplies for Katherine and me. Joey once came home with bolts of vintage red and white striped canvas ticking and covered the cushions on the white wicker furniture on our summer front porch.

I learned the art of buying from her. Choose carefully. Move quickly. Don’t dither. She always had a stack of SOLD tags in her purse so she could claim her finds. When I opened The Sewing Workshop in San Franciso in 1980, she came out and helped me set it up. Mom loved to come to our traditional designer sales to lend a hand - and shop. She helped run estate sales in St. Paul for many years, always in charge of taking the money, always added (correctly), in her head, scorning calculators. I still feel her presence when shopping, whether at a Paris flea market or choosing fabrics.
