I learned the art of buying from her. Choose carefully. Move quickly. Don’t dither. She always had a stack of SOLD tags in her purse so she could claim her finds. When I opened The Sewing Workshop in San Franciso in 1980, she came out and helped me set it up.

Mom loved to come to our traditional designer sales to lend a hand - and shop. She helped run estate sales in St. Paul for many years, always in charge of taking the money, always added (correctly), in her head, scorning calculators. I still feel her presence when shopping, whether at a Paris flea market or choosing fabrics.
