A WORD ABOUT TARIFFS AND TEXTILES

For those of us who sew, it’s no secret that most of America’s textile production was sent overseas decades ago. That’s why so many of the fabrics we love come from abroad.

In recent months, much ado has been made about tariffs and textiles, for good reason. The current climate of chaos is fueled by uncertainty as cases brought by other small businesses make their way through the courts.

It would be easy (and logical) to say that tariffs on textiles are, in reality, a reverse tax on Americans. While this is generally true, there are exceptions.

Over the decades, I have cultivated close connections with fabric sources around the world who have deep roots in high fashion, many of whom I can call friends.

From those friendships flow decades of trust and a shared belief in fundamental fairness. As a result, some of our sources are temporarily covering the cost of some or all of the tariffs on textiles, while other sources simply cannot afford to.

Marcy Tilton Fabrics is also covering some or all of the added cost of tariffs when possible. Because tariffs differ greatly from country to country and source to source, there is no hard-and-fast rule that can be applied to all fabrics from all sources in all countries, hence the chaos.

The new sky-high tariffs on textiles came along just as a home-sewn movement was coming of age for a new generation. Our aim is to continue to bring you rare, exclusive, and impeccable fabrics from around the world at the best prices possible.

Depending on the outcome of cases now working their way through the courts, tariffs could decrease or, unfortunately, increase even higher. We don’t know, and won’t know, until events unfold.

We aim to ease the impact of higher tariffs on textiles by offering subscribers (that’s you) first-dibs deals, private sales, and other discounts. You can count on subscriber savings for as long as higher tariffs are in place—and beyond.
