Renowned Russian artist Vasily Kandinsky has long been praised as the first abstract artist. However, art historians of late have come to credit female Swedish artist Hilma of Flint with producing the first pieces which probably influenced the Russian painter who is widely reputed to have backdated his work to achieve the claim to fame.
Abstract art emerged en masse in the early 20th century as the classical realism of the Gilded Age gave way to a new generation of artists with a radically different way of depicting the world. Artists such as Piet Mondrian, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Joan Mitchell, Richard Diebenkorn, Lee Krasner, Ray Eames, and Cy Twombly, among others, broke with the grandeur of the Gilded Age in a revolt against traditional, conventional artistic norms.
Today we find abstract art everywhere, especially in fashion. Our ABSTRACT PRINTS COLLECTION is packed with fashion-forward knit and woven fabrics featuring a panoply of prints inspired by some of the movement’s most famous painters.
Remember that today you can also save 20% off all OEKO-TEX FABRICS. Your instant savings will be automatically applied to all fabrics in your cart from both the ABSTRACT and OEKO-TEX collections.
