Corduroy dates back to ancient Egypt. However, the plush piles and wide wales we associate with cozy corduroys today originated in Manchester, England at the start of the Industrial Revolution.
Contrary to lore, the word corduroy most likely comes from the combination of the words cord, a ribbed fabric, and duroy, a lightweight worsted wool. The linguistic legend of ‘cord du roi,’ meaning the ‘cloth of the king,' is less likely since the French translation for corduroy is velours côtelé. Moreover, it was mills in Manchester that first mass-produced it.
