Rayon was originally invented as a silk alternative, followed by viscose which is considered the highest grade of rayon. Airy rayons are ideal for soft slimming summer clothes, but they require little extra TLC when working with them.

Here is a helpful trick I use to keep rayon stable on the table. First, I place the fabric on a large piece of paper and square off the ends to align with the grain both lengthwise and crosswise. Then I place the pattern pieces on the fabric and pin through the paper too.

The stabilizing paper underlay keeps the pattern pieces in place so that you can move them around and mark them up without distorting the shape. This trick makes it much easier to make a nice clean cut.

Thanks to organizations such as Tencel, Oeko-Texand EcoVera, rayon is increasingly made from more sustainable sources such as bamboo with better biodegradable practices.
