During the Renaissance Italian fashion was expensive and extravagant—so much so that Italian florins became a sort of reserve currency for luxury fabrics. Italian bankers traded gold brocades and silk velvets with braggadocious bourgeoisie who wore them as status symbols of nobility and wealth.
After decades of difficultly following the Industrial Revolution, Italians revived their rich textile tradition to re-emerge as a contemporary source of some of the finest fashion fabrics in the world.
