Bonjour from Paris!
Today I am happy to bring you more additions to the EMBROIDERY & EYELETS COLLECTION.
Eyelet, also known as broderie Anglaise, (French for English embroidery) originated in what is now the Czech Republic but first gained widespread popularity with Victorian-era women who typically wore them as undergarments. According to the 1885 edition of The Dictionary of Needlework, eyelet was also a common trim for sleeves. The first eyelet machine was invented by W. H. Rodgers and patented in the United States in 1859. Since then, eyelets have endured as a forever trending fashion staple.
Today eyelets are outerwear and can be found in the collections of top fashion houses the world over. They have become synonymous with summer dresses and are très on trend again. Check out a recent report in VOGUE titled Dainty and Delicate, Eyelet Dresses Make Summer More Lovely and another in POPSUGAR titled Trend Alert: Sweetness and White. In the USA, pricey eyelet collections can be found at Bloomindales and Nordstrom, and I am seeing eyelets in boutique windows all over Paris right now. Below are a some window shopping pics I took since arriving last week.
Garments made in eyelet fabrics can be simple, sweet, frilly, romantic, whimsical, elegant, or edgy, depending on your pattern choice and personal style. We can’t wait to see what you sew with them! If you’re looking for sewing tips check out my blog post about sewing with eyelets.
Happy Sewing!
